Deoghar, April 25: Government and private doctors in Deoghar resumed attending patients late Thursday evening, ending a 38-hour strike after the district administration assured them that the remaining eight accused in the assault on Dr. Kundan Kumar would be arrested soon.

The doctors resumed their duties following a meeting held at 8 PM in the Sadar Hospital conference hall.

Meeting with Administration

Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Ravi Kumar, representing the Deputy Commissioner, informed the doctors that two of the 10 named accused had been arrested, and efforts were underway to apprehend the remaining eight.

Sadar police station in-charge Rajiv Kumar represented the police administration at the meeting. The SDO also assured representatives from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Jharkhand State Health Services Association (JSHSA) that the administration would work closely with doctors to ensure timely action in similar incidents in the future.

Doctors Agree to Resume Work

IMA President Dr D. Tiwari confirmed that, based on the administration’s assurances, both the IMA and JSHSA decided to call off the strike with immediate effect.

The doctors had begun their indefinite strike at 6 AM on Wednesday, April 23, demanding the arrest of those involved in the attack on Dr Kundan Kumar, who was assaulted at his home on April 20 following the death of a critically ill infant.

The medical bodies had initially given a 48-hour ultimatum, which led to the strike when no action was taken within the timeframe.

IMA Secretary Dr Gauri Shankar credited the success of the strike to the collective efforts of doctors across the district. He also expressed gratitude to IMA State President Dr A.K. Singh, Secretary Dr Pradeep Kumar Singh, JSHSA State President Dr Bimlesh Singh, and Secretary Dr Thakur Mritunjay Kumar Singh for their support throughout the agitation.
