SUBHASH MISHRA
Dhanbad, August 29: The East Central Rail Karmchari Union (ECRKU), representing around 22,500 employees of the Dhanbad Rail Division, today voiced concerns regarding the difficulties faced by staff in accessing emergency medical treatment.
The union demanded immediate solutions from the railway management during a Permanent Negotiating Machinery (PNM) meeting.
Union highlights medical and safety issues
Md Ziauddin, the Dhanbad Division in-charge of ECRKU, presented two key demands before the Railway Divisional authorities. The first issue raised was the challenge employees face in obtaining timely medical referrals, and the second concerned the shortage of safety kits for staff members.
The meeting was presided over by DRM Dhanbad Rail Division Kamal Kishore Sinha, with Senior Divisional Personnel Officer Ajit Kumar conducting the proceedings. Md Ziauddin represented the employees’ body, stressing the urgency of addressing these issues.

Assurance from divisional railway authorities
After hearing the union’s demands, the Divisional Railway authorities assured the ECRKU leaders that steps would be taken to resolve the problems faced by employees.
ECRKU media in-charge Nil Kamal Khawas emphasized that Md Ziauddin highlighted the hardship employees endure in emergency situations, particularly the difficulties encountered when seeking treatment at super-specialty hospitals.
Referral hospitals often demand admission fees, and employees face additional challenges in getting referrals from the Divisional Hospital.
Additional demands for safety and infrastructure
In addition to medical concerns, the ECRKU leaders demanded that employees in the electrical department be provided with adequate safety kits, including shoes, gloves, helmets, and other essential equipment.
The union also urged management to improve infrastructure in railway colonies, including the provision of proper lighting in the Dhanbad railway colony, improved drinking water facilities at Latehar railway station, and the installation of a new transformer at Tori railway station.
