Experts discuss remote sensing and GIS at BIT Sindri

Dhanbad, Dec 13: Experts from various technical institutions in Jharkhand gathered at BIT Sindri to explore the applications of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in research. The event, organised by the Civil Engineering Department of BIT Sindri, was sponsored by the Jharkhand Council on Science, Technology, and Innovation (JCSTI), Ranchi.

The programme featured prominent speakers, including Dr. Mili Ghosh Nee Lala from BIT Mesra Ranchi as the chief guest. Dr. Komal Kumari and Dr. Iqbal Sheikh from BIT Sindri, along with Shantanu Rai, Assistant General Manager at BSNL, were the guests of honour.

GIS in Geospatial Research

Chief guest Dr. Mili Ghosh Nee Lala delivered the keynote address on the topic “Application of GIS in Geospatial Research.” She explained that GIS is more than just a tool—it is a powerful technique for storing, analysing, and visualising geographic data. According to her, GIS plays a crucial role in urban planning, land use management, smart city development, and disaster management.

Role of Remote Sensing

Shantanu Rai, AGM at BSNL, highlighted the importance of remote sensing and GIS technologies in modern research and their practical applications. He emphasised that the workshop would showcase the diverse and impactful ways these technologies are being used across various fields.

Practical Sessions on GIS and Remote Sensing

Dr. Komal Kumari, Assistant Professor at BIT Sindri, conducted a practical session on GIS applications in hydrology. She demonstrated how GIS technology can be used for catchment area delineation and its relevance in watershed management, flood risk analysis, and water resource planning.

Prof. Iqbal Sheikh from BIT Sindri led a hands-on session on the use of RS and GIS in contouring, providing participants with practical insights into these technologies’ applications.

Workshop Highlights

The workshop opened with a welcome address by Dr. Jitu Kujur, Head of the Civil Engineering Department and the event’s convener. Dr. Maya Rajnarayan Rai concluded the program with a vote of thanks.

Senior faculty members, including Dr. Udai Kumar Singh, Dr. Prafulla Kumar Sharma, Dr. B.D. Yadav, Dr. Nishikant Kisku, Dr. Saroj Meena, and Dr. Prashant Ranjan Malviya, were also in attendance on the fourth day of this informative workshop.

The event provided an excellent platform for exchanging knowledge and exploring the potential of GIS and remote sensing in addressing real-world challenges.
