Dhanbad, Jan 29: Four students from the Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ), Ranchi, have successfully completed a research internship at BIT Sindri, focusing on the “Environmental Impact of Coal Spontaneous Combustion and Mine Fire.”

The students—Musukha Basumatary, Sunaina Kumari, Amisha Kumari, and Sahil Raj Naik—conducted their research under the guidance of Prof. Tanmay Dasgupta, who oversees the Mine Environmental Engineering Laboratory, Coal Characterization Laboratory, and Mining Analytical Research Center at BIT Sindri.

Practical Experience with Advanced Equipment

The internship, which ran from December 27, 2024, to January 24, 2025, provided students with hands-on experience in analyzing gas emissions caused by coal spontaneous combustion and mine fires.

During this period, they worked with advanced laboratory equipment, including the Coal Thermal Stability Determination Apparatus and Gas Chromatograph, to study emission gases and assess their environmental impact.

According to Prof. Dasgupta, the internship was designed to help students understand the environmental consequences of coal combustion.

Their work involved coal sample preparation, gas emission analysis, and risk assessment related to mine fires, contributing valuable insights into pollution control and mine safety.

Felicitation Ceremony and Recognition

A felicitation ceremony was held to acknowledge the students’ achievements. Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Singh, Head of the Department of Mining Engineering, awarded certificates to the interns, emphasizing the importance of combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

“Completing this internship is a significant step in your academic and professional development, as it combines both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in environmental science”, said Prof PK Singh.

The Department of Mining Engineering at BIT Sindri congratulated the students on their successful completion of the internship and extended best wishes for their future academic and professional endeavors.
