Dhanbad, Nov 26: An ITBP jawan, identified as Sandeep Kumar (28), was killed in an accidental gunfire at the Balaipur Binod Bihari Mahto College base camp, located about 20 km from Dhanbad district headquarters, on Tuesday morning, according to police officials.

Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Rudra Prayag, Uttarakhand, had been assigned to the Jharkhand Assembly elections in the Sindri constituency of Dhanbad district. He was staying at the college base camp with his battalion.

Other security personnel heard a gunshot in the morning and rushed to his room, where they found him unconscious with a bullet wound to his chest. He was immediately taken to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH), where doctors declared him as brought dead.

Upon receiving the news, Superintendent of Police (City) Ajit Kumar, along with other officials from Baliapur and Sindri, arrived at the scene to begin an investigation.

While the incident appears to be a case of accidental gunfire, the investigation will determine the exact cause, police officials said.
