The lady health worker was unwell. She was given food to eat by her sister-in-law (wife of husband’s brother), her next-door neighbour. Police found plates with stale food in them.

The brutal murder of the lady health worker in Palamu has sent shock waves. The Tarhassi police are making all-out efforts to crack this case.

The case appears to have a tinge of deep-seated hostility where a lone woman has a variety of challenges which overtake her so tragically. Infatuation for a male by a woman while living alone is a major temptation and that temptation ends up in tragedy.

The 33-year-old health worker identified as Anju Devi was found murdered in her two-room house at Parpayn village, about 25 km away from the nearest police station Tarhassi in Palamu.

Officer in charge of the Tarhassi police station Niraj Singh told this correspondent today, “Anju Devi had a deep cut in her throat. She was in a pool of blood right at the door of her one room.” She was killed around 10 pm on November 24. She lived alone here.

Police officer Niraj said, “Anju Devi used to come here from Ranchi on days of routine and special immunisation only. The rest of the days she used to spend in Ranchi.”

“This Saturday she was here. Some unidentified people killed her,” added the police officer.

First discovery of the body

Reminded that as she used to live alone then who was the first to see her dead to which police officer Niraj said, “Here is the enigma. The deceased’s sister-in-law (name withheld by the police) was the first to find her dead in a pool of blood at night itself.”

Further, the sister-in-law lived in another house, 10 meters away from where Anju lived.

Again, pestered as when Anju was gagged and her throat slit then where is the possibility of her making cries for help that too around 10 pm winter night and how on earth her sister-in-law went to her so late at night only to find her throat cut and dead, to which police officer Niraj said, “Our prime suspect is her sister-in-law. We are quizzing her. She is yet to break down. But this sister-in-law appears to be unconnected.”

Premeditated, ruthless murder

The police officer agreed the murder of Anju was a pre-meditated, pre-planned and most ruthlessly executed one.

Asked if the deceased had any external marks of physical and sexual assault on her, Niraj said “Her clothes didn’t show it. Her clothes were dishevelled but were not indicative of any sexual attempt. She was just finished.” Police are trying to find out who the killer or killers could be.

Sources said the murder was carried out by three men. The deceased lived alone so her sister-in-law as well.

Was any male who used to visit this lady health worker eliminated her? Police are investigating it.

SDPO Lesliganj Manoj Kumar Jha said, “I have inspected the place of occurrence. There is something fishy.”

When the SDPO was told by this correspondent that there were plates in the room from which food was eaten by the health worker, the SDPO said, “I can’t make any more elaboration right now.”

Civil Surgeon expresses sorrow

Civil Surgeon Dr Anil Kumar expressing his profound sorrow for the loss of Anju Devi said, “We stand with her family in this hour of great tragedy. From our corpus fund, we will give ex gratia relief worth 75,000 rupees to her family.”

The Civil Surgeon further said if the deceased’s family offers to be a health worker in her place, our office will have a sympathetic consideration for it.

The Civil Surgeon said, “We believe police will crack the case and the killer or killers will be booked soon.” Her post-mortem was conducted at the MMCH Daltonganj.

The deceased’s husband lodged the FIR on November 25 with the Tarhassi police station.

Niraj Singh expressing hope said, “This case would be solved sooner than later.”

SDPO Jha said the case is more than what meets the eye.
