Daltonganj, September 5: School girls are worried and conscious about the contents that come to them through social media on their cell phones.

Some contents are obscene. Some are obnoxious. Some extremely vulgar. School girls feel helpless. They do not know what to do and how to do it.

A lady police officer Parwati Kumari, SI of police and officer in charge of the Mahila Thana Hussainabad is proving a mentor and friend of the school girls.

Breaking the ice with students

Parwati Kumari and her team visited a government girls’ middle school at Hussainsbad.

She told this correspondent today, “When we reached the school, the girls there gave an impression that all is good with them. They were reluctant to speak.”

“I saw around. I knew as long as there would be a male teacher before the girls, the girls would never pour out their hearts. So, I requested the male teacher to relax and off the scene,” said the lady police officer.

Parwati Kumari went on to say, “Once the girls found their male teacher off the scene they opened up like anything. It was related to their cell phones, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram etc”

Sharing experiences and anxieties

A few girls there told the lady police officer as to how she got into cellular conversation with boys. They said it was all their curiosity at first but later on they began to realise that the boy was trolling them. He has having ill motive and design.

The girls are in a no-win situation. They have not shared this friendship or phone conversation with boys with their families fearing their families will chide them and there is a strong possibility that their families may ask them to stop going to school and abandon their studies.

The girls also told the lady police officer Parwati Kumari how they find dirty content through social media where nudity is offered.

Boys keep calling and calling and when the calls are not received there is the fear of the phone getting hacked.

Girls have mental agony because of the undesirable calls coming to them. A momentary lapse on their part when they first began calling and talking to boys is now giving them a hell of a time.

Lady police officer Parwati Kumari said, “It’s great that girls are coming forward to share their anxieties with the police. We are here to take care of them.”

Guidance on safe phone use

Girls have WhatsApp groups. It is here they share their study notes and other academic information. So, a cell phone in their possession is no unheard-of thing.

Parwati Kumari said, “I asked the girls to make cautious use of the cell phone. The first caution is never to share phone numbers or anything with a stranger, especially boys. It may become a big problem later on.”

“They’re Spam advertisements. Block it. Close it. It will save your time,” the lady police officer advised them.

“As regards vulgar videos, obscene content, and indecent reels they should use the restricted mode of their cell phones to stall it,” said Parwati Kumari.

“Never exchange any personal details of yourself with a stranger boy again. And in the event of the boy trolling them or making calls to them from various unknown numbers don’t panic. Inform us. We will handle them,” assured the lady police officer.

“I have given the girls my personal number and have asked them to feel free to tell me their problem. There will be all confidentiality and secrecy of their identity,” she assured them.

Girls have one more worry. It’s their male teachers should not know about it otherwise they may be tempted to make any impression or image of the girl which is bound to be not positive at all.
