Dhanbad, April 8: The massive turnout of kids, especially from Bengali families, was witnessed in the ‘Sit and Draw’ competition organised by 114-year-old Hirapur Lindsey Club and Library on the eve of Bangla Nutan Varsh.

The organiser said over 500 kids from different schools in the city participated in various age groups of the competition. The victorious kids of the competition would be felicitated in the cultural function to be organised on the occasion of  Bangla  Nutan Varsh on April 14.

The president of  Lindsey Club and Library Dr Amlendu Sinha, director of Central Institute of Mineral Fuel Research (CIMFR) Dhanbad, said that this is one of the oldest painting competitions of  United Bihar that has been organised by Lindsey Club  Dhanbad for kids on the eve off  Poila Baishakh since  1910.

The painting of all kids would be displayed for public view at Lindsey Club on the occasion of  Poila Baisak celebration on April  14 evening,” he said.

The organiser said today all participants were felicitated, and their guardians were also presented token gifts by a company to encourage the kids to participate.

Dipak Kumar Sen, the secretary of Lindsey Club, thanked the principal of all schools, guardians and   Club members for making the painting competition successful.

One of the active members and artists, Arun Kumar Banerjee, said this painting competition has historical importance. We have been organising Sit and Draw competitions before every Poila Baisakh since 1910 to preserve traditional Bangla art and culture. Not only Poila Baisak, Lindsey Club also celebrate the birth anniversary of Ravindra Nath Tagore and Durga Puja on a large scale.

“The centre of attraction of this Sit and Draw competition is that not only Bengali speaking kids but also students of Hindi and local language participated in it in large numbers,” said Arun Kumar Banerjee.
