Jamshedpur, June 30: In an attempt to empower rural youth with essential digital skills, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur has launched a week-long Digital Literacy and Skill Development Workshop from June 30 to July 4.

The initiative, jointly organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Computer Science, aims to bridge the digital divide and connect young minds from rural areas to the digital world.

The workshop was formally inaugurated by Prof. Gautam Sutradhar, Director of NIT Jamshedpur, today.

Addressing the participants, he emphasized the importance of digital education in today’s world, stating, “In the current era, computer literacy is not just a technical skill but a vital step towards self-reliance.”

Prof. Ram Vinoy Sharma, Deputy Director of the institute, highlighted how digital tools can simplify and enhance daily life, especially in rural settings. “If children from villages embrace technology, they too can play an active role in the nation’s development,” he remarked.

Prof. Satish Kumar, Dean (R&C), underscored that digital literacy is the foundation of empowerment. “This workshop will instil the confidence and capability needed to thrive in a competitive environment,” he added.

The program is being coordinated by Prof. Dilip Kumar and Prof. Alok Priyadarshi, who have reached out directly to rural households to raise awareness about the importance of digital education. Using local languages and relatable examples, they explained the relevance of digital tools in everyday life.

Participants, including local adolescents, are being trained on basic computer operations, safe internet usage, digital communication, access to e-governance services, and responsible use of social media.
