Dhanbad, Jan 27: The five-day Nurturing Future Leadership Program (January 27 to 31) commenced today at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
The training program is being conducted under the Malviya Mission Teacher Training Program and has brought together 38 faculty members from 22 educational and technical institutions across the country. Participants include representatives from institutions such as Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Central University of Kashmir, Central Sanskrit University (Agartala), Mahatma Gandhi Central University (Agartala), Asansol Girls’ College (Asansol), and Sikkim Government College (Gangtok).
Importance of leadership
Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM), served as the chief guest for the inaugural session. In his address, he emphasized the importance of leadership, stating:
“Leadership qualities are developed through persistent efforts over time. However, identifying the right field and defining key parameters are vital first steps. A true leader inspires respect and commands a following by showcasing distinct qualities and traits.”

Prof. Somnath Chattopadhyay, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, highlighted the role of networking in leadership development. He mentioned that the program’s field visits, combined with access to the advanced laboratories and facilities at IIT (ISM), aim to foster collaboration and networking, which are essential components of leadership in today’s interconnected world.
Prof. Mrinalini Pandey, Program Director of the MMTP Centre and Coordinator of the Nurturing Future Leadership Program (NFLP), welcomed the participants. She noted that the program, which began with just seven participants in its first phase, has now grown to 38 participants in its third phase. This reflects the increasing interest in leadership training among faculty members.
Leadership in academic practice
On the first day, participants explored topics such as leadership in academic practice, coaching and mentoring leaders, managing workplace emotions, interpersonal relationships, and inclusive leadership.
“These sessions aim to foster a culture of continuous learning and growth, both at the individual and organizational levels,” said an official.
As part of the program, participants will visit a mine, the Maithon Dam operated by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), and the Geological Museum of IIT (ISM).
