Dhanbad, Jan 23: Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad has become the third medical college hospital in Jharkhand to launch a dedicated Spine and Pain Clinic for patients suffering from joint pain and related issues.
This addition follows the launch of similar facilities at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Ranchi and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur.
A Step Towards Relief for Patients
At the inauguration of the clinic, Dr. KK Lal, Principal of SNMMCH, expressed optimism about the new facility, stating that it would bring much-needed relief and comfort to patients enduring severe joint pains.
“This will provide great relief and relaxation to the patients suffering from severe joint pains,” Dr. Lal remarked.
A New Approach to Pain Management
Prof. (Dr.) SK Chourasia, the Superintendent of SNMMCH, highlighted the importance of the clinic, noting that it would offer a more advanced and sustainable solution for joint pain relief, eliminating the need for painkillers that often have harmful side effects.

“Generally, patients use painkiller drugs which hit the kidneys and cause ulcers. But at this clinic, advanced treatment for joint pain would be provided without drugs. An injection every six months or a year would treat the root of the pain,” Dr. Chourasia explained.
Although Dr. Chourasia was scheduled to attend the inauguration, he was unable to do so due to a sudden official meeting at the state headquarters.
Addressing Growing Concerns of Joint Pain
Prof. (Dr.) DP Bhushan, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, pointed out that joint pain has become a widespread issue due to poor nutrition and lifestyle factors.
“The complaint of joint pain in people has become a common problem. Due to the lack of different kinds of nutrition, people are suffering from different pains,” said Dr. Bhushan.
He further emphasized that the opening of the clinic would provide advanced treatment and substantial relief to patients. “Of course with the opening of this clinic at SNMMCH, now patients will get advanced treatment and sheer relaxation from joint pains”, said Dr DP Bhushan.

Clinic to Benefit North Chhotanagpur and Santhal Pargana
Dr. PK Sengar, the in-charge of the Spine and Pain Clinic and Associate Professor and HoD of Anaesthesia, mentioned that joint pain was not only a common issue among older adults but increasingly affecting the younger generation as well.
“Now with the opening of the Spine and Pain Clinic at SNMMCH Dhanbad, the patients of North Chhotanagpur and Santhal Pargana would benefit a lot,” Dr. Sengar said.
“At present, the clinic would attend patients two days in a week, Wednesday and Thursday”, added Dr Sengar.
The clinic is set to operate two days a week—on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Comparatively, the clinic at RIMS Ranchi operates only two days a week, while MGMMCH Jamshedpur runs it for one day.
Several senior faculty members from various departments were also present at the inauguration ceremony, marking an important step in advancing healthcare services in the region.
