Jamshedpur, April 23: The body of one of the two teenagers who drowned in the Subernarekha river along Bagunhatu under Sidhgora thana area was recovered by local divers on Wednesday.

Nikhil Mahanand (14) and Suraj Sandil (15) drowned in the river while taking a bath on Tuesday afternoon, along with a third boy, as there was not enough water at their home during the scorching sun.

After the surviving boy Suraj Machhua informed at the house of the victims, the latter had informed the police who had started a search operation for the missing duo.

First Body Recovered, Second Still Missing
A couple of local divers were engaged in the job on the initiative of the Sidhgora thana OC, Gulam Rabbani. But the search operation stopped after darkness descended and the OC Rabbani promised to bring in a team of NDRF for the search operation which continued today. The police pressed the local divers on the insistence of the anxious parents and incidentally recovered one of the bodies.
The body that has been recovered is that of Nikhil Mahanand while the body of Suraj Sandil is still in the water body.
“The NDRF team, which was stationed at Patna, is on its way to Jamshedpur, but the search operation by the local divers is on,” said Rabbani while talking to The Jharkhand Story.

Eyewitness Account
Significantly, Suraj Machhua (14) while talking to the newsmen, said that they all had already taken a bath in the river, but two of his friends had taken a plunge in the river once again to play with the hyacinth developed there.
“I had tried to save them when I noticed them drowning at the deep water zone, but eventually I had to return back,” said the boy, adding that he could not save his friends from drowning.
