Jamshedpur, Sept 5; A huge elephant was fatally injured after being hit by the Dhanbad-Bhubaneswar Special train under the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway about 120 km away from here.

The wild tusker met the mishap near Sonakhan station early in the dawn and succumbed to its injuries in the afternoon.

The mishap occurred while the elephant was strolling on the track coming out of the forest area.

The area where the accident took place falls under the elephant corridor, and the speed limit of the trains’ movement has to be maintained under 40 kmph.

As a result of the mishap, train movement stopped through the stretch, leading the railway and forest department officials to rush to the spot.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Chakradharpur, Aditya Choudhary said the train was well under the prescribed speed limit and claimed the mishap occurred as the elephant had suddenly come from the side of the railway track.

“On seeing the sudden appearance of the elephant, the driver had pressed the emergency brake, but it was too late. The elephant sustained in its legs only,” the senior DCM said while talking to The Jharkhand Story.

The senior railway officer pointed out the railway and forest department had made arrangements to take the injured tusker to a Bhubaneswar-based veterinary hospital and had arranged a crane for this, but it succumbed to its injuries by 3.00 pm.
