Daltonganj, July 16: There would now be a test for TB of all those accused forwarded to judicial custody here.
A decision to this effect has been taken at the UTRC (under trial review committee) meeting.
The UTRC meeting is chaired by the principal district and sessions judge Niraj Kumar Srivastav here.
Prisoners with symptoms to be in isolation until negative TB report comes
Giving this information secretary of the Palamu district legal services authority Arpit Shrivastva said, “The principal district and sessions judge Niraj Kumar Srivastav who is the chairman of the DLSA at the UTRC meeting held on Monday directed the superintendent of the central jail to ensure test for TB of accused remanded in judicial custody who have complaints about persistent cough and fever.”
Such a person in judicial remand is to be kept in isolation till the report of his being negative for TB comes in.
Sources said there are a large number of TB cases in Palamu where presumptive TB is a lurking danger.
The principal district and sessions judge Niraj Kumar Srivastav’s directive to the jail superintendent for TB tests on the accused remanded in judicial custody having complaints or symptoms of cough and fever persisting for weeks is being seen as a very humane approach to the freshers and other inmates of the central jail here.

Jail paramedics to perform TB tests
This correspondent spoke to the superintendent of central jail Bhagirath Karjee today who said, “the principal district and sessions judge has given this direction to conduct test for TB of accused remanded in judicial custody.”
Karjee further said, “We will be acting upon this very soon. I am trying to get in touch with the civil surgeon and district TB officer for the nitty-gritty of the test for TB.”
“We have some paramedics here in our medical unit in the central jail. I believe they will be able to perform the TB tests,” added the jail superintendent.
On being reminded that paramedics may be a raw hand for this test to which Karjee said, “It’s true. I will get my paramedics trained. They will be sent to the civil surgeon and district TB officer to learn the art of conducting tests.”
Civil Surgeon ready to help with TB testing of accused
Again this correspondent spoke to the civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar to know as to how he would assist the jail officials in having the test for TB of the accused forwarded to judicial custody.
Civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar responded saying “I eagerly look forward to the letter of the jail superintendent in this regard. I assure him of our all-out assistance and medical help.”
“We will send sputum collection pots to the central jail. The jail paramedics will be taught how to collect the sputum.” said the civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar.
Sputum collection process
Sputum is collected right in the morning when a person leaves his bed after his night’s sleep and coughs and coughs.
The second collection of sputum is of any time in the day, reminded the civil surgeon.
The civil surgeon said, “The test for the sputum will be done here at the TB care centre. The jail paramedics are just to collect the sputum with finesse only. We will train them as to how to go about the collection of the sputum.”

Sputum test for TB
There is DMC (designated microscopic centre) at our TB care centre here added the civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar. Here sputum is tested with precision.
District epidemiologist Dr Anup Kumar Singh said we do test for TB through TruNet and CBnet as well.
“On testing positive we will provide them with full course of medicines. I again say the jail officials should begin it fast. Our services will be readily available to them”, reiterated the civil surgeon.
