Jharkhand records 70% surplus rainfall in monsoon so far

Jamshedpur, July 8: Jharkhand has received 432.9 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 7, against a normal average of 255.3 mm for the period, recording a surplus of 70%, according to statistics of Meteorological Centre, Ranchi.

Such a huge surplus rainfall was recorded during the first week of July after about 10 years or so.

Out of 24 districts, 22 districts have reported normal to excess rainfall, while two districts — Garhwa (-19%) and Sahebganj (-21%) — fall under the ‘Deficient’ category.

The state’s overall rainfall trend is significantly above average, benefitting agricultural activities, especially paddy sowing.

Meanwhile, the Ranchi Meteorological Centre predicted heavy rainfall in several isolated pockets of the state today, July 8.

Forecast of light to moderate rainfall was also issued for July 8 and 9 , in several parts of the state.

East Singhbhum: 717.7 mm (+136%)

Ranchi: 670.8 mm (+155%)

Latehar: 608.4 mm (+152%)

Simdega: 584 mm (+88%)

Seraikela-Kharsawan: 607.2 mm (+126%)

Districts with Deficit Rainfall

Garhwa: 150.8 mm (Normal: 187 mm, Departure: -19%)

Sahebganj: 253 mm (Normal: 319.2 mm, Departure: -21%)

The highest departure from normal was observed in Ranchi (+155%), followed closely by Latehar (+152%) and East Singhbhum (+136%), indicating intense and widespread monsoon activity over these areas.

Baburaj P.P, head of the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi, confirmed the surplus and emphasized continued monitoring to assess the impact on agriculture and water resources in the state.
