Daltonganj, June 13: Records generated during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 of electoral rolls will be treated as permanent records and must be preserved with utmost care, according to Election Commission of India (ECI) directives.

Sources said the ECI found the records of the 2003 SIR conducted in Jharkhand to be unsatisfactory. As a result, all documents related to SIR 2026 are to be maintained securely and preserved in their entirety.

According to the ECI directive, district election officers are required to keep SIR records in both physical and electronic formats. The Commission will maintain electronic records through ECINet.

BLOs Asked to Ensure Careful and Transparent Mapping

Palamu Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Dilip Pratap Singh Shekhawat has directed Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to exercise discretion, fairness and transparency while carrying out voter mapping and verification.

He stressed the need for special care in cases where a voter was mapped with a husband during the previous SIR, but is currently mapped with the father in the latest electoral roll.

Potential Discrepancies Identified During Verification

Officials have been alerted to possible cases involving multiple claimants linked to the same parent. Such situations may arise when individuals are recorded with the same father or mother in earlier SIR records, while another individual also claims the same parent, despite an age gap between the children being less than nine months.

Authorities have also noted that discrepancies may exist between parent names recorded in the current electoral roll and those listed during the previous SIR exercise.

Name and Age Errors May Reappear

Election officials have been cautioned that spelling mistakes in names and inaccuracies in age, which are common in electoral records, may resurface during the SIR process and require scrutiny.

The Election Commission has emphasised that maintaining accurate and secure records is essential to ensuring the integrity of the electoral revision exercise.
