Jharkhand teachers resent Christmas holiday reduction in RU Ranchi, BBMKU Dhanbad, SKMU Dumka

BBMKU teachers' delegation presents memorandum to VC over Christmas leave

Dhanbad Dec. 16: The teachers of three universities out of seven in the state are on the boil over partiality in the Christmas holiday facility.

Ranchi University Ranchi, Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) Dhanbad, and Sido Kanhu Murmu University (SKMU) Dumka have given a single-day Christmas holiday on December 25.

At the same time, Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) Hazaribagh, Kolhan University (KU) Chaibasa, Nilamber -Pitamber University (NPU) Palamu, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University have given more than a week’s leave for Christmas( December 22 to 31).

Dr Raj Kumar, Secretary of the Federation of Universities Teachers Association of Jharkhand (FUTAJ), a senior faculty member of Ranchi University, said that partiality in Christmas leave has triggered teacher resentment.

A delegation of the BBMKU Post Graduate Teachers Association (PGTA) under president Dr Bhagwan Pathak and general secretary Dr DK Singh met Vice-chancellor Dr Pawan Poddar and requested him to provide Christmas leave at par with other state universities.

“The vice-chancellor listened to our demand and assured us to do what needful after taking a directive from the Chancellor’s office ( Raj Bhawan) over the matter,” said Dr Pathak.

At Sido Kanhu Murmu University, Dumka, a delegation of the Teachers Association under the Secretary, Dr Santosh Sil, met vice-chancellor Dr Vimal Prasad Singh and urged him to give Christmas leave at par with KU, VBU and NPU.

“We apprised the V-C that some university teachers belong to Lohardaga, Chaibasa and other faraway districts. They can’t go to their house for the Christmas celebration and return the same day. So, it should be given as other universities have given,” said Dr Sil.

Interestingly, the teachers of SKMU used to get one week’s leave at Christmas, but when Dr Sona Jharia Minz, also a Christian, became vice-chancellor, she curtailed the holiday. “We also presented evidence to present V-C Dr Vimal Prasad Singh about week-long  Christmas leave, he added.

Dr Sujit Kumar Soren, Dr Kamal Kishore Singh, Dr Amir Hussan were other delegation members that met the V-C.

According to the notification, VBU Hazaribagh has declared Christmas leave from December 25 to December 30.

Nilamber-Pitamber University has announced Christmas leave from December 23 to December 31 in its calendar, while Kolhan University has given a holiday from December 23 to December 30.
