Jharkhand Weather: IMD forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms across State

Jamshedpur, Aug. 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across parts of Jharkhand on Thursday, with several districts in the western, southern and central regions likely to receive intense showers under the influence of an active monsoon system.

According to the IMD, moderate thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places across the state, while heavy rainfall is expected over north-western districts and parts of southern Jharkhand.

Heavy rain alert for several districts

The weather office has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Simdega, West Singhbhum, Lohardaga, Gumla, Ranchi and Khunti, where isolated heavy showers may occur during the day.

Officials cautioned that intense rainfall could trigger localised waterlogging, reduced visibility and temporary disruption of traffic, particularly in low-lying areas.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under isolated trees and follow official weather advisories.

Active monsoon system driving rainfall

Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to an active monsoon pattern over eastern India.

The monsoon trough currently extends from Sri Ganganagar through Rohtak, Shahjahanpur, Sultanpur, Gaya and Bankura before stretching eastwards towards Mizoram.

In addition, multiple upper-air cyclonic circulations over northeast Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, northwest Uttar Pradesh and central Assam are enhancing moisture inflow and atmospheric instability over Jharkhand, leading to widespread rain-bearing conditions.

Rain likely to continue over next two days

The IMD said thunderstorm activity is expected to persist across Jharkhand over the next few days.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Gumla and Khunti on August 7 and 8, indicating that the active monsoon phase will continue through the weekend.

“The active monsoon pattern, supported by favourable synoptic conditions, is likely to keep weather conditions unstable over Jharkhand. Residents should stay updated with official forecasts and exercise caution during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall,” an IMD official said.

Kolhan receives heavy rainfall

Several parts of the Kolhan region, including Jamshedpur, received heavy rainfall on Wednesday, in line with the IMD forecast.

The rainfall brought relief from humid conditions but also led to waterlogging in low-lying pockets, with more showers expected across the region as the monsoon remains active.
