Dhanbad, September 6: Adhiraj Mitra from Jharkhand achieved a commendable 5th position in the Under-12 Open category of the Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship 2024, which concluded in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Thursday evening.
According to Manish Kumar, the Indian squad manager in Colombo and All Jharkhand Chess Association (AJCA) secretary, Mitra displayed outstanding performance throughout the tournament, earning 5.5 points over nine rounds.
Mitra is the sole representative from Jharkhand
Jamshedpur’s Mitra, the sole representative from Jharkhand in the national squad, won five matches, drew one, and lost three.
“Though he did not finish in the top three, Adhiraj showed impressive performance,” said Manish Kumar.
Indian players dominated the championship, with Mayush Mazumdar, Akhil Prasad, and Sidharth Poonja securing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, respectively.

“Indian players dominated the championship and swept almost all trophies”, said Manish Kumar, who is also joint secretary of the All-India Chess Association.
International Arbiter (IA) Jayant Bhuyan of Jamshedpur, along with Prabhat Ranjan (AJCA coordinator), Ajay Kumar (secretary of Seraikela District Chess Association), Basant Khandelwal (secretary of West Singhbhum District Chess Association), and one of the top-ranked senior player Rohqan Shandilya, extended their congratulations to Mitra for his remarkable performance.
IA Jayant Bhuyan, Mitra’s mentor, praised his performance and expressed confidence in his potential to excel at the senior level.
