THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK
New Delhi, Dec 18: Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched the party’s crowdfunding campaign, ‘Donate for Desh’.
The campaign is geared towards “empowering the party to create an India rich in equal resource distribution and opportunities”.
The online crowdsourcing campaign will run until December 28, the day of the party’s founding. Following that, volunteer door-to-door outreach will be launched by the party, with each booth aiming to collect at least Rs 138 from each of the ten residences that are targeted.
Kharge donates Rs 1.30 lakh
Discussing the campaign, Kharge mentioned that it marks the inaugural instance of the Congress party seeking public donations. He referenced Mahatma Gandhi, who similarly relied on public contributions during the freedom movement.

“It’s the first time that Congress is asking people for donations for the nation… If you work only by depending on the rich people, then you have to follow their policies. Mahatma Gandhi also took donations from the public during the freedom struggle,” Mallikarjun Kharge stated.
At the initiation of the campaign, commemorating the party’s 138 years, Kharge contributed Rs 1.38 lakh.
Better to ask donations from common people than from businessmen: AS Lovely
Delhi Congress President Arvinder Singh Lovely remarked, “This is a very nice initiative by AICC. Even Congress President Mallikarjun Khadge believes it is better to ask for contributions from the common people rather than businessmen. So we expect all our party workers and senior leaders to contribute.”
“One thing I’m particularly excited about is, when we will go door to door to meet our voters after December 28, it will prove to be a win-win situation,” he further stated.
Inspired from Mahatma Gandhi: KC Venugopal
Speaking about the campaign, Congress leader KC Venugopal stated that it is modelled after Mahatma Gandhi’s famous ‘Tilak Swaraj Fund’ of 1920–21 and that it intends to strengthen Congress in building an India rich in equitable resource distribution and opportunities.
