Kiran Rao's ‘Laapataa Ladies’ selected as India's official entry for Oscars 2025

Chennai, Sept 23: The Film Federation of India announced on Monday that ‘Laapataa Ladies’ directed by Kiran Rao has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025.

The leads in the film are played by Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta.

Made in Hindi, ‘Laapataa Ladies’, a light-hearted satire on patriarchy, was selected from a diverse shortlist of 29 films. This list featured notable entries such as the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Animal’, the Malayalam National Award winner ‘Aattam’, and the Cannes award-winning ‘All We Imagine As Light.’

The 13-member selection committee, led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, has unanimously chosen ‘Laapataa Ladies’ as India’s entry for the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards.

The film, produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, was selected for its candid portrayal of patriarchy.
