Ranchi, September 5: Apart from Bengal, where protests are widespread, doctors in other states have largely refrained from protesting the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. However, resident doctors at the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) Ranchi stood in solidarity, advocating for justice by switching off their lights and organizing a candle march on Wednesday.
Candle march and human chain for justice
As part of their pre-announced plan, CIP Ranchi resident doctors turned off the lights in their hostel for one hour, from 9 PM to 10 PM. They then proceeded with a peaceful candle march, also forming a human chain late into the night. Their protest was intended to press for swift justice for the family of the murdered trainee doctor.
During the same time, residents of Bengal, including doctors and the general public, also turned off their lights and held candle marches across 121 cities in the state, with a special focus on various areas of Kolkata. The synchronized efforts in Ranchi and Bengal emphasized the widespread demand for justice.

Kolkata doctors appreciate CIP Ranchi’s support
Doctors leading the ongoing protests in Kolkata expressed deep appreciation for the actions of the CIP Ranchi Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA). Despite hesitation from many medical bodies following a Supreme Court ruling, CIP Ranchi’s involvement has provided moral support to the agitating doctors in Kolkata.
A young doctor in Kolkata, actively involved in the protest, mentioned that while the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and its branches in different states have stepped back, CIP Ranchi’s demonstration has reignited hope. The doctor, requesting anonymity, praised CIP Ranchi’s solidarity efforts.
CIP Ranchi’s peaceful protest
In Ranchi, the candle march was organized peacefully under the banner of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) CIP Ranchi.
Dr Avinash Vipin, media secretary of the RDA CIP, reported that nearly all resident doctors at the institute participated, forming part of the human chain. “Resident doctors at CIP are shocked and dismayed by the delay in justice for such a ghastly incident,” Dr Vipin stated.
The event showcased CIP Ranchi’s commitment to supporting its peers in Kolkata and seeking justice for the victim, reinforcing the call for action and reform within the medical community.
