Mumbai, March 5: Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi has been suspended from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today for the entire ongoing budget session following his controversial remarks about Aurangzeb.

The proposal for his suspension was put forward by Maharashtra Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil which was approved by the Speaker Rahul Narwekar.

Azmi reportedly remarked that Aurangzeb was not a cruel ruler and had constructed many temples. He added that the clash between the Mughal emperor and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was a dispute over governance, rather than a Hindu-Muslim issue.

On Tuesday, Azmi clarified that his comments had been misrepresented and expressed his willingness to retract his statement and apologize if it caused any offense.

“My words have been twisted. I have said what historians and writers have claimed about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Ali. I have not made any derogatory comment about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj or any other great men – but still if anyone has been hurt by my statement, then I take back my words, my statement,” Azmi said on X.

A zero FIR was initially filed against Azmi at the Naupada Police Station in Thane and later transferred to the Marine Drive police station in Mumbai in relation to his comments about Aurangzeb.
