New Delhi, March 14: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has blocked 18 OTT platforms that publish obscene, vulgar and at times pornographic content.

In India, access to 19 websites, 10 apps (7 available on the Google Play Store and 3 on the Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts linked to these platforms have been blocked for the general public.

Dreams Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Adda, Tri Flicks, X Prime, Neon X VIP, Besharams, Hunters, Rabbit, Xtramood, Nuefliks, MoodX, Mojflix, Hot Shots VIP, Fugi, Chikooflix, and Prime Play are among the OTT platforms that have been blocked.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting statement said that the current decision was made in accordance with the Information Technology Act, 2000, after consulting with specialists in the fields of media and entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights, as well as other ministries of the Indian government.

“A significant portion of the content hosted on these platforms was found to be obscene, vulgar, and portrayed women in a demeaning manner. It depicted nudity and sexual acts in various inappropriate contexts, such as relationships between teachers and students, incestuous family relationships, etc. The content included sexual innuendos and, in some instances, prolonged segments of pornographic and sexually explicit scenes devoid of any thematic or societal relevance,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry disclosed that one of the OTT apps had amassed over 10 million downloads, while two others had exceeded 5 million downloads each. Furthermore, the total number of followers across the social media accounts of these OTT platforms amounted to over 3.2 million users.
