New Delhi, Jan 22: The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of the National Health Mission (NHM) for an additional five years, ensuring the continuation of efforts to strengthen public healthcare systems.

Announcing the decision on Wednesday, Union Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the significant milestones achieved under the Mission over the past decade.

Launched in 2005 as the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and later expanded into the NHM, the program is designed to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare, particularly to rural and vulnerable populations. It extends its services up to the District Hospital level, aiming to create a robust public health infrastructure.

Goyal noted that the NHM played a crucial role in India’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, supported by nearly 12 lakh healthcare workers who joined the Mission between 2021 and 2022.

The initiative has been pivotal in addressing healthcare challenges and advancing the country’s public health objectives.
