New Delhi, Dec 19: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha has sparked ongoing uproar both inside and outside Parliament. On Thursday, before the Parliament session began, ruling party and opposition MPs faced off in the Parliament premises.
The situation escalated to the point of a scuffle between the MPs, during which ruling party MP Pratap Sarangi was injured. Sarangi sustained an eye injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
In this regard, BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi said, “Rahul Gandhi pushed a member of Parliament who fell on me after which I fell down. I was standing near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi came and pushed an MP who then fell on me.”
BJP MPs were blocking me: Rahul Gandhi
Responding to the allegations, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi stated that while he was trying to enter Parliament through the main gate, BJP MPs attempted to block his way, pushed him, and tried to intimidate him. On broader issues, he accused the BJP of attacking the Constitution and attempting to tarnish the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Opposition MPs hold protest march in Parliament
Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha has sparked protests from the opposition. Members of the INDIA alliance staged a demonstration outside Parliament on Wednesday, demanding an apology and resignation from Amit Shah.
On Thursday, before the Parliament session began, MPs from the INDI Alliance, dressed in blue, held a protest march in the Parliament premises led by Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The march started from the Ambedkar statue in Parliament and proceeded to the Makar Dwar. Some INDIA alliance MPs even climbed the wall near the Makar Dwar of the Parliament building to protest, reiterating their demand for Amit Shah’s apology and resignation over his comments on Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha.
This protest followed Amit Shah’s attack on the Congress party, where he remarked that mentioning Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” for the party.
“If they had taken the name of God so many times instead of Ambedkar then they would have got heaven for seven lives,” Shah said in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
