Dhanbad, July 22: PK Roy Memorial College Dhanbad, one of the oldest constituent unions of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU), set a new trend in universities of the state by holding first time a sports competition, especially for faculty members.
Chess competition for faculties
On the occasion of International Chess Day, the PK Roy Memorial College sports department organized a chess competition especially for faculty members of the institution to mark the auspicious day.
All senior teachers, including the principal of the college Dr Kavita Singh, brushing aside her busy schedule participated in the day-long knock-out competition. The coordinator of the competition, Dr Ashutosh Rahul Tirkey, said that due to a shortage of time competition was played on a knock-out basis to complete in one day.
In the final Dr Dhananjay Kumar Singh defeated Dr Himanshu Kumar Shukla to get the honour of first chess champion teacher of the college.

Dr Dhananjay wins first semifinal
Earlier, Dr Dhananjay Kumar Singh defeated Dr Satyam Chatterjee in the first semifinal while Dr Himanshu Shukla beat Dr KK Rana to ensure berths for the title clash. In the nail-biting finale, Dr Singh succeeded in clinching the title.
The performance of Dr Sharmila Kumari, Dr Sushil Kumar Lal, Dr DK Choubey, Dr Sagar Swain, and Dr Ashutosh Rahul Tirki stunned the participants in the championship.
This was the first time a college in the University of state held a sports competition, especially for faculty members after the creation of Jharkhand.
Dr SKL Das lauds college’s step
A retired professor of the university Dr SKL Das (1977 batch teacher) highly appreciated the move of PK Roy Memorial College and said that the institution has revived the tradition of the united Bihar Era.
“Before the separation of state tug of war, 100 mt race and other events were held for teachers in different colleges on the occasion of annual sports day. But PK Roy Memorial College has revived the old tradition”, he said.
Principal Dr Kavita Singh highly appreciated the performance of faculty members and said that she had no idea teachers of college in such large numbers play chess so well.
