Alipurduar, May 29: In a major boost to clean energy infrastructure in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a ₹1,010 crore city gas distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar district on Thursday.

The initiative aims to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households across Alipurduar and neighbouring Cooch Behar districts, alongside establishing 19 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations.

Highlighting the broader significance of the project, Modi emphasized that Bengal’s active participation is crucial to India’s aspiration of becoming a developed nation.

“When India is on the path to becoming a Viksit Rashtra, Bengal’s role is not only expected—it is essential,” he said, stressing the Centre’s continued efforts to expand infrastructure, investment, and innovation in the region.
The Prime Minister noted that the gas pipeline venture represents more than just infrastructure—it reflects the government’s push to bring welfare schemes directly to citizens’ doorsteps. “This isn’t merely about laying pipelines. This is about ensuring households receive clean, affordable energy through direct access,” he added.

The project is expected to generate local employment and provide a reliable, eco-friendly alternative to conventional fuels for domestic, industrial, and commercial users. Modi also praised the cultural and geographical richness of the region, describing Alipurduar as a land that connects borders and celebrates diversity—from Bhutan to Assam, from Jalpaiguri to Cooch Behar.
