Nicosia, June 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III—Cyprus’ highest civilian honour—by President Nikos Christodoulides during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Monday.

The award, named after the first president of the Republic of Cyprus, is reserved for heads of state and distinguished individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the nation. It marks a significant moment in India-Cyprus relations.

Accepting the honour, PM Modi said it reflects “the aspirations and capabilities of 140 crore Indians” and embodies India’s values of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.” He dedicated the award to the strong ties and shared democratic values between the two countries.

Modi described the recognition as a responsibility to further deepen the India-Cyprus relationship, reaffirming his commitment to global peace and cooperation. “This honour symbolises our dedication to peace, security, and prosperity,” he said, expressing optimism that the partnership will continue to grow and reach “new heights” in the future.
