Dhanbad, August 1: President Droupadi Murmu has called upon technology professionals not to confine their knowledge to personal growth but to use it for the development of society, the state, and the nation.
Addressing the 45th convocation of IIT (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, as the chief guest on Friday, the President urged students to channel their skills toward building a stronger and more just India—an India where opportunities for advancement are available to all.
“Use your knowledge to build a developed, green India—not at the cost of nature, but in harmony with it. Whatever you do in the future should reflect empathy, excellence, and ethics along with intelligence. Let innovation be driven by compassion,” she said.
Highlighting the complexity of global challenges, President Murmu noted that the country and the world are grappling with issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, digital disruption, and social inequality.
“In such a scenario, the role of an institute like IIT-ISM becomes even more crucial. The institute should lead in finding sustainable and innovative solutions,” she emphasized.

India’s Development Goals and Human Capital
President Murmu reiterated India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 and said that students are the torchbearers of this goal. “You can play a major role in the holistic development of the nation,” she added.
She stressed that India’s biggest strength lies in its vast human resources. With increasing access to technical education and the spread of digital skills, India is steadily progressing toward becoming a technological superpower.
Making education more practical, innovation-oriented, and industry-linked will allow youth talent to thrive on the global stage, she said.
Appreciation for IIT-ISM’s Legacy and Contribution
The President lauded IIT-ISM’s nearly century-long legacy. Established to train experts in mining and geology, the institute has expanded its academic horizons and emerged as a leading center for higher education and research across diverse fields.
“This institute has played a vital role in technological development and innovation. It has created an ecosystem where education and innovation objectives align with the needs of the people and the aspirations of citizens,” she said.

Murmu emphasized that IIT-ISM not only needs to produce excellent engineers and researchers but also compassionate, sensitive, and purposeful professionals.
“The future of our country is taking shape through the commitment of institutions like IIT-ISM, which promote cutting-edge research and innovation while guiding bright young minds,” she added.
