PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Ranchi, May 14: Jharkhand is likely to witness an extended spell of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds till May 19, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting intermittent rain activity across large parts of the state.

The changing weather pattern is expected to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures, but may also increase humidity levels and trigger uncomfortable conditions in both urban and rural areas.

According to the latest IMD forecast, several districts are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds ranging between 40 and 60 kmph over the next few days.

IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert Across Jharkhand

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity, especially in districts vulnerable to lightning and strong winds.

On Thursday, thunderstorm and lightning activity is likely in most parts of Jharkhand, except the north-western region. Districts including Ranchi, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Saraikela-Kharsawan, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Khunti are expected to receive rain accompanied by gusty winds.

Stronger Winds Likely in North-Eastern Districts

On Friday (May 15), eastern and adjoining central districts are likely to continue receiving rainfall with winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph.

Meanwhile, north-eastern districts such as Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar, Jamtara, Giridih and Dhanbad may witness stronger gusts of up to 60 kmph.

The weather is expected to remain active on May 16 and 17, especially over southern and central Jharkhand, including Koderma, Ranchi, Bokaro and the Kolhan region.

Meteorologists said isolated thunderstorm activity may continue in different parts of the state till May 19.

Why Jharkhand Is Witnessing Sudden Weather Changes

According to weather experts, the present weather conditions are being influenced by a trough associated with an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh.

The system is drawing moisture into Jharkhand, leading to atmospheric instability and triggering thunderstorms and rain activity across the state.

Farmers Concerned Over Crop Damage

While residents may welcome the drop in temperatures, the unseasonal rain and gusty winds have raised concerns among farmers.

Strong winds and sudden showers may damage standing crops and disrupt harvesting and crop management activities in several districts.

Agricultural operations could also face delays due to fluctuating weather conditions over the coming days.

Safety Advisory Issued

Weathermen have advised people to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles, and secure loose outdoor objects to prevent accidents.

For Jharkhand, the changing weather remains a double-edged sword — offering brief respite from the heat while creating fresh uncertainty for the farming community.
