New Delhi, August 20: Today marks the 80th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In honour of the late Rajiv Gandhi, India observes “Sadbhavana Diwas” every year on August 20.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and several other senior leaders paid tribute to him and remembered his contributions.

Additionally, Rahul Gandhi, along with several Congress leaders, visited “Veer Bhumi” and offered flowers at the memorial of the former Prime Minister.

In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), PM Modi paid his respects by saying, “Tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary.”

Rahul Gandhi emphasizes his commitment to realizing Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for India

Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on his birth anniversary. He emphasized his commitment to realizing Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for India, carrying his father’s memories with him as he does so.

“A compassionate personality, an epitome of camaraderie and goodwill… Papa, your teachings are my inspiration, and your dreams for India are my own – I will fulfil them, taking your memories with me,” Rahul Gandhi posted on X.

Rajiv Gandhi brought India into 21st century with his unprecedented contribution: Kharge

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge while paying his tributes said “Today, the country is celebrating Sadbhavana Diwas. Former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, was a great son of India. He ignited a ray of hope in crores of Indians and brought India into the 21st century with his unprecedented contribution.”

आज देश सद्भावना दिवस मना रहा है। पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री, राजीव गाँधी, भारत के महान सपूत थे। उन्होंने करोड़ों भारतीयों में आशा की किरण जगाई और अपने अभूतपूर्व योगदान से भारत को 21वीं सदी में पहुँचा दिया।

“His many pleasant initiatives like lowering the voting age to 18 years, strengthening Panchayati Raj, telecom and IT revolution, computerization program, continuous peace accords, women empowerment, universal vaccination program and new education policy with emphasis on inclusive education brought about transformational changes in the country. We pay our heartfelt tributes to Bharat Ratna, Rajiv Gandhi ji on his birth anniversary,” Kharge added in his post on X.

Rajiv Gandhi played key role in 1985 budget: Jairam Ramesh

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh also recognized and celebrated Rajiv Gandhi’s impact on India’s political and technological development.

“Today is the 80th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. His political career was short but highly eventful. He played a key role in the March 1985 budget, which gave a new approach to economic policy. A few weeks before his martyrdom, he spent many hours preparing the Congress party’s manifesto for the 1991 Lok Sabha elections, which laid the foundation for the historic reforms brought in by Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in June-July 1991”, Ramesh posted on X.
