Ranchi, February 20: Ranchi Sadar Hospital achieved a major medical milestone after successfully removing a 5-kilogram tumour that had been growing for 17 years in a 54-year-old patient.
The complex surgery was carried out by the Neurosurgery team led by Dr Vikash Kumar at the Sadar Hospital in Ranchi.
17-Year-Old Cervico-Dorsal Tumour Removed
According to Dr Vikash Kumar, the tumour was located in the cervico-dorsal (neck and upper back) region and had caused the patient severe pain, heaviness and significant difficulty in performing daily activities.

“The tumour had grown so large that the patient found it extremely difficult to tilt the head, sit properly or even sleep,” he said.
The case was considered highly complex. The patient had previously consulted several major hospitals, where surgery was reportedly declined due to the high risk involved. After seeking treatment at various private hospitals in the state capital, the patient eventually approached Sadar Hospital.
Dr Kumar and his team took up the challenge and performed the lengthy and intricate procedure using advanced surgical techniques, careful planning and extreme precision.

State Health Minister Irfan Ansari, who monitored the case throughout the surgery, congratulated the doctors and hospital staff.
He said the successful high-risk surgery at a government hospital was a matter of pride and a great relief for the public. The minister added that the doctors involved would be honoured for their achievement.
Sadar Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr Bimlesh Kumar also congratulated Dr Vikash Kumar and the Neurosurgery Department, stating that the hospital has been consistently performing major surgeries.
He said such rare procedures would strengthen public confidence in government healthcare facilities, noting that treatment at Sadar Hospital is not only successful but also significantly more affordable than at corporate hospitals.
