SC likely to hear petition against CBI probe into Dhanbad coal theft on Jan 3

New Delhi, Dec 28: The Supreme Court is likely to hear the petition filed against the Jharkhand High Court’s order for a CBI probe into coal theft in Dhanbad and alleged police involvement in it on 3 January, 2025.

According to the Supreme Court’s website, the case has been listed before a bench headed by Justice Sandeep Mehta. So far, the CBI has submitted its response in this matter.

The first hearing of this case in the Supreme Court was held on October 18. On that day, the apex court had stayed the order of the Jharkhand High Court, which had directed a CBI inquiry into coal theft in Dhanbad and police involvement in it. The order to stay the CBI inquiry will continue till further orders.

On October 3, the Jharkhand High Court directed the CBI to investigate all police officers named as respondents in this case. The order was issued by the bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Dwivedi.

Challenging this decision, the state government approached the Supreme Court. Following the Supreme Court’s stay, the investigation into the alleged coal theft and police involvement in Dhanbad is currently on hold.
