New Delhi, Jan 7: The Supreme Court has directed the state government and the assembly to appoint the leader of the opposition from the largest opposition party in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly as the leader of the opposition for the appointment of the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and Information Commissioner.
The Supreme Court said this is an essential task that must be completed within two weeks so that the selection committee can begin the selection process immediately afterward.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court urging the filling of vacant positions in the Jharkhand State Information Commission. In the hearings so far, the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand had submitted a compliance affidavit, which stated that an advertisement was issued in June 2024.

However, the selection process could not be initiated because, after the Jharkhand Assembly elections, the leader of the opposition in the Assembly has not been announced. Since the leader of the opposition is a member of the selection committee, a meeting could not be convened.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer informed the court that the State Information Commission in Jharkhand has been inactive since 2020. Several positions, including that of the Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioners, have been vacant for a long time.
