New Delhi, Feb 28: The Supreme Court today overturned the termination of two women judges by both the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the State government and ordered their reinstatement within 15 days.

The decision was made by Justices B V Nagarathna and N Kotiswar Singh, with Justice Nagarathna emphasizing that the action was unjust. The verdict also addressed the broader issue of women in the Indian judiciary.

The matter stemmed from a case in which the Madhya Pradesh state government had terminated six women civil judges for alleged poor performance in November 2023.

However, after reconsideration, the Madhya Pradesh High Court reinstated four of the judges on certain conditions in August 2024, but excluded Aditi Kumar Sharma and Sarita Chaudhary from the decision.

The Supreme Court had reserved its judgment on December 17, 2024, regarding the two officers’ terminations.
