New Delhi, Feb 5: The Madras High Court’s sentence of 15 days in prison for retired IPS officer Sampath Kumar was stayed by the Supreme Court on Monday in response to a contempt of court case filed by cricket player MS Dhoni.

Concerned respondents were also notified by a bench of justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan on the plea that IPS officer Sampath Kumar had filed.

Dhoni filed contempt of court petition in 2022

Through his advocate B Balaji, Sampath Kumar has appealed to the Supreme Court, contesting the Madras High Court’s ruling that imposed a 15-day imprisonment in response to the contempt of court petition filed by cricketer MS Dhoni.

In 2022, Dhoni filed a contempt plea against the officer, alleging that he had made disparaging remarks against the Supreme Court. Dhoni has filed a legally mandated process against Kumar in an attempt to take legal action against him.

Kumar was involved in the investigation of the spot-fixing and betting cases that occurred in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013.
