Jamshedpur, February 26: Security forces on Thursday foiled a major Maoist sabotage attempt in the dense Saranda forests of West Singhbhum after recovering and safely destroying a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near Tontogara.
The explosive was detected during a routine anti-Naxal search operation carried out jointly by district police and paramilitary personnel in the sensitive forest belt, which has long been considered a Maoist corridor.
IED Planted on Route Used by Security Forces
According to official sources, the IED was strategically planted along a route frequently used by security personnel. Investigators believe the device was intended to target patrol teams and disrupt ongoing operations against extremist groups in the region.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the bomb disposal squad quickly cordoned off the area and conducted a controlled detonation. The operation was completed without any casualties or damage.
Combing Operations to Continue
Senior police officials said timely detection and swift action prevented a potential tragedy. They added that intensified combing and search operations will continue across Saranda to neutralise Maoist threats and maintain peace in West Singhbhum district.
Saranda, one of Asia’s largest sal forests, has witnessed repeated anti-Naxal operations in recent years as security forces aim to curb extremist activities in the region.
