Jharkhand: Six Nilgais rescued from well in Palamu by Medininagar forest team

Daltonganj, April 25: In a swift rescue operation, six nilgais were saved after falling into a kaccha well in the village Talee under Chainpur police station limits in Jharkhand’s Palamu district. The rescue was carried out early Saturday morning by the Quick Response Team (QRT) of the Medininagar forest division.

How the Nilgais Fell into the Well

According to sources, the well had no parapet, which allowed the animals to fall into it one by one. Nilgais, which often move either alone or in herds, are known for their collective movement.

Rescue Operation Completed in 30 Minutes

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Satyam Kumar monitored the entire operation. A JCB machine, along with a team of around six forest personnel—Sunil, Vivekanand, Roshan, Rakesh, and others—worked with the support of residents. The team dug a passage near the earthen well, allowing the nilgais to climb out safely. The animals then moved back towards the nearby forests.

Speaking to this correspondent, DFO Satyam Kumar said that nilgais are often seen moving between the jungles of Burhi Beer and Chakarbhonga, and it is likely that the group accidentally fell into the well during movement.

Sources added that the well contained a little over six feet of water. A non-venomous snake, identified as a checkered keelback (locally known as Dhounrwa), was also found inside the well.

In a similar incident a few months ago, a lone tusker from Bihar was rescued in Palamu after it crossed into Jharkhand through a river. That operation was also conducted under the supervision of DFO Satyam Kumar and his team.
