Sona Devi University celebrates Tagore’s 165th birth anniversary

Jamshedpur, May 10: Sona Devi University, Ghatshila, celebrated the 165th birth anniversary of Kavi Guru Rabindranath Tagore with enthusiasm and reverence at the Vivekananda Auditorium on Saturday. A colourful cultural programme was organised to honour the literary icon, philosopher and Nobel laureate.

Addressing the gathering, Chancellor of Sona Devi University Prabhakar Singh described Tagore as a towering personality “whose very act of being honoured brings honour to those who celebrate him.”

He highlighted Tagore’s contribution to India’s cultural renaissance and said Gurudev stood for creativity, freedom of expression and cultural awakening.

Speakers Highlight Tagore’s Educational Vision

University Registrar Dr Nit Nayna spoke about Tagore’s lasting influence on education and human development. She said his vision of nurturing creativity and promoting harmony with nature continues to inspire educational institutions across generations.

The programme began with ceremonial lamp lighting and floral tributes to Tagore’s portrait.

Cultural Performances Mark Celebration

Students and faculty members paid tribute through cultural performances. B.Pharm students Baleshwari Mardi and Lakshmi Murmu presented dance performances, while Assistant Professor of English Anusuya Roy delivered a cultural presentation.

Dr Nibha Shukla, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, spoke on the relevance of Tagore’s teachings in contemporary times.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Krishnendu Dutta presented a musical tribute and said, “where the mind is free, Tagore lives on.”

B.Pharm student Sandeep Singh Dev and Finance Department staff member Priyanka also shared their views on the continuing relevance of Tagore’s ideals.

The programme concluded with the national anthem.

The event was anchored by Priyanjana Banerjee, Head of the Bengali Department, while Kanchan Sinha, Head of the History Department, delivered the vote of thanks.
