New Delhi, Dec 14: In a major development, South Korea’s parliament has voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his declaration of short-lived martial law earlier this month.
The motion was passed by the National Assembly with a 204-85 vote on Saturday.
Consequently, Yoon’s presidential powers and duties will be suspended once the copies of the impeachment document are handed over to him and the Constitutional Court.

According to the country’s laws, the Constitutional Court has up to 180 days to decide whether to remove Yoon from his office or reinstate his powers. If the court opts to remove him, a national election to elect his successor must take place within 60 days.
If the court approves his removal, Yoon would become only the second president in South Korean history to be impeached successfully.
Under South Korean law, with Yoon suspended from office, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will step in as acting president.
