Stampede at religious gathering in UP’s Hathras claims 27 lives

Hathras, July 2: Over 80 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede during a religious gathering in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district on Tuesday, according to India Today.

Hathras District Magistrate Ashish confirmed approximately 60 deaths in his district, while officials from Etah reported an additional 27 deaths in hospitals there, as per India Today.

However, PTI reported 50 to 60 deaths in the same incident. According to PTI, a district official provided an update based on hospital reports, stating that it is believed 50 to 60 people were killed.

Earlier, Rajesh Kumar Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police of Etah, reported that the stampede occurred during a ‘satsang’ event in Pulrai village.

“A religious event was going on in Mughalgarhi village of Hathras district when the stampede occurred. So far 27 dead bodies have been received in the Etah Hospital, including 23 women, 3 children, and 1 man. The injured have not reached the hospital. Further investigation is being carried out. Identification of these 27 bodies is being carried out.” Etah SSP Rajesh Kumar Singh told reporters based on the earlier update.

CM Yogi orders immediate relief efforts

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has taken notice of the tragic incident and sent his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. He has also instructed the district administration to expedite relief efforts at the scene.

CM Yogi has also instructed district administration officials to reach the scene immediately and speed up the relief and rescue efforts.

He declared a compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for each of the injured.

President Murmu offers condolences

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The news of the death of many devotees, including women and children, in the accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is heart-rending. I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” the President posted on X.

PM Modi announces ex-gratia

PM Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for each of the injured.

“The Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Hathras. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000″, Prime Minister’s Office poted on X.
