Supreme Court orders NEET-PG 2025 to be held in single shift

THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, May 30: The Supreme Court has ordered the NEET-PG 2025 exam to be conducted in a single shift instead of two.

The court directed the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to conduct this year’s exam in a single shift instead of two shifts. The court clearly stated that holding the exam in two shifts is unjust and may lead to discrimination against students.

The court clarified that NBE still has enough time to make the necessary arrangements since the exam is scheduled for June 15, 2025. A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and Justice NV Anjaria passed this order while hearing petitions challenging NBE’s decision to conduct NEET-PG 2025 in two shifts.

NBE argued before the court that normalization is applied to ensure both papers are of the same standard. Rejecting this argument, the court said that conducting the exam in two shifts leads to arbitrariness. It is impossible to treat any two question papers as identical, which results in unequal opportunities for students. The exam should be conducted transparently in a single shift.

NBE further claimed that there are not enough exam centers to conduct the exam in a single shift, but the court rejected this reasoning as well. The court observed that the country’s technological capabilities have advanced enough to allow the exam to be held in one shift with proper arrangements.

The court stated that the exam authority still has over two weeks to identify suitable centers since the exam date is June 15, 2025. It directed the NBE to ensure the necessary arrangements for conducting the exam in one shift while maintaining full transparency and securing appropriate exam centers.
