Supreme Court to hear Kolkata doctor’s rape-murder case on Aug 20, takes cognizance

New Delhi, August 18: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A three-judge bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud will hear the case on Tuesday, August 20.

Apart from Justice DY Chandrachud, the bench includes Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.

On August 9, a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found with injuries in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. An autopsy later revealed that she had been raped before being murdered. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in CBI custody.

On Friday, two Supreme Court lawyers along with a doctor from Telangana wrote to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, urging him to take suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Dr. Monica Singh from the Army College of Dental Sciences in Secunderabad, Telangana, submitted a letter petition through her advocate Satyam Singh, requesting immediate action following a series of attacks on medical professionals, especially the recent incident in Kolkata.

Notably, the Calcutta High Court ordered on August 13, that the investigation of this case be handed over to the CBI. The court also instructed the Kolkata Police to transfer the case diary to the central investigative agency by August 13 evening and to submit all other documents by August 14 morning at 10 a.m. Following the court’s order, the CBI began its investigation on August 14.
