Jamshedpur, June 17: Zoya, the iconic African lioness and one of the most popular attractions at Tata Steel Zoological Park, died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness, zoo authorities said.

The 16-year-old lioness, brought to Jamshedpur from Africa in 2012, had been suffering from a congenital medical condition for an extended period. Despite continuous veterinary care and close monitoring by zoo officials, her health deteriorated over time.

Zoo Mourns Loss of a Beloved Resident
According to zoo authorities, Zoya succumbed to a congenital ailment and had been under treatment for a considerable period.

Over the years, she became one of the most recognisable and cherished residents of the zoo, captivating generations of visitors and wildlife enthusiasts.

Her death marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Tata Steel Zoological Park.
Post-Mortem Conducted as Per Protocol
A post-mortem examination was carried out following her death. Subsequently, zoo authorities performed her last rites in accordance with prescribed wildlife management protocols.
The Forest Department and the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) have also been informed, as required under regulatory guidelines.
Zoya was among five African lions—two males and three females—brought to Tata Steel Zoological Park in 2012 under a planned animal relocation programme.
She emerged as one of the biggest crowd-pullers at the zoo and remained a favourite among visitors throughout her life. Two lionesses from the same group had died earlier.
