PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, August 4: India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi centre has forecast a spell of thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 Kmph) at isolated places across Jharkhand from August 4 to August 7.

The weather activity is expected to be triggered by the prevailing monsoon trough and an upper-air cyclonic circulation.

Forecast Details

August 4–5: Isolated places across Jharkhand are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds.

August 6: The pattern is expected to persist with similar intensity, particularly over central and northern parts of the state.

August 7: The activity will continue, though the intensity may gradually decrease by the evening.

The IMD has advised people to take precautions during thunderstorm hours, avoid open areas, and ensure safety during lightning occurrences.

Synoptic Features

According to the IMD’s synoptic analysis, the monsoon trough at mean sea level currently extends from Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shamli, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, Chapra, Bankura, Canning and moves southeastward into the northeast Bay of Bengal.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation has developed over northwest Bihar and adjoining northeast Uttar Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 Km above mean sea level.

This system is tilting southwestwards with height, which enhances moisture incursion and instability over Jharkhand.

These weather systems are collectively responsible for localized thunderstorms and strong winds across eastern India, including Jharkhand.

Jharkhand records 46% surplus rainfall

Jharkhand has so far recorded 46 per cent surplus rainfall this monsoon season, leading to healthy water levels in reservoirs and rivers.

However, frequent thunderstorms and lightning strikes during this season have also been associated with fatalities and damage to property.
