Wayanad, August 2: Kerala’s ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar said on Friday that, despite heavy rains in Mundakkai, Wayanad, a large-scale search and rescue operation is ongoing. Approximately 300 people are still missing.

The death toll from the landslide that occurred on Tuesday due to the heavy rains had reached 190 by yesterday, with officials anticipating the number may rise.

Kumar told reporters that according to the information available so far, around 300 people are still unaccounted for. The revenue department is engaged in gathering details, and a clear picture is expected to emerge within a day or two.

The health department has reported that 201 people have died and 264 are injured.

The ADGP in charge of law and order in the state stated that the landslide-affected areas have been divided into six zones, and search teams with canine units have begun their operations. He mentioned that the Kerala Police, with the help of specialized agencies, will conduct search operations in the Chaliyar River up to Kozhikode city.

Kumar added that search operations are also being carried out in the river. Bodies were recovered from Pothukal yesterday, prompting instructions for all police stations along the Chaliyar River to conduct search operations in their respective areas.

Reports indicate that bodies have been found along the Chaliyar River in Malappuram district. Officials noted that 143 bodies and several body parts recovered from areas around the Chaliyar River in Malappuram have been brought to Wayanad.
