Jamshedpur, Feb 12: On the 275th birth anniversary of India’s first freedom fighter, Veer Shaheed Baba Tilka Majhi, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Mahabir Murmu called upon the youth to take responsibility for protecting water, forest, land, and cultural identity.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the annual cultural and sports program organized by Baba Tilka Aven Akhada at the Mango Baliguma Baba Tilka Majhi Stadium in Jamshedpur.
Paying tribute to Baba Tilka Majhi, Mahabir Murmu garlanded his statue and highlighted his role as India’s first freedom fighter who led a rebellion against British rule from 1771 to 1784.

“Baba Tilka Majhi became a martyr to save our water, forest, land, and culture. Even today, the youth must come forward to protect these resources and our identity. Only then will our existence be preserved,” Murmu stated.
The event included cultural performances and sports competitions, celebrating the spirit of unity and community participation. In the 100-meter race (boys), Sameer Tudu from Dimna secured the first position, followed by Chandan Singh from Turiyabeda and Sagen Murmu from Baliguma.
In the girls’ category, Sandhya Rani Baske from Dimna won the race, with Shaili Hembram and Rupali Soren taking the second and third positions, respectively. The frog race and the traditional ‘breaking the pot’ competition also witnessed enthusiastic participation.

The program was attended by several JMM leaders, including Fateh Chand Tudu, Ramesh Murmu, Mohan Hansda, and others. The event concluded with a call for youth to uphold Baba Tilka Majhi’s legacy by safeguarding natural resources and cultural heritage.
