Jamshedpur, Nov 4: While onion prices have spiralled to Rs 60 or more since the past fortnight hitting the menu considerably, it is being sold at Rs 25 a kg at several outlets in the rural pockets near Jamshedpur.

At the Parsudih locality, which comes under the panchayat area, the onion was sold at Rs 25 per kg thanks to the measure taken by the National Co-operative of Consumers’ Federation (NCCF), a government of India organisation.

The functionaries of NCCF have made posters and banners which they have fixed at different strategic points in the panchayat areas around the steel city to make the people aware of the sale of onion at low prices so that latter can get this essential item without having to pay as high as Rs 60 a kg for the same.

The sale of onions through NCCF outlets has started in the city since Friday and will continue as the supplies come to Jamshedpur.

An official of the NCCF said the stock of onions is from Delhi and so far two truckloads of onions have already been sold off.

“We are selling the onions in plastic carry bags, each containing two kgs at the rate of Rs 25 a kg. On Friday we sold the onions at Mango, Golmuri and Agrico areas in and around the Steel City. Today we have sold it at Pramothnagar and Makdam localities, both in the Parsudih area, ” said Ajay Tiwari, an official of the NCCF while talking to The Jharkhand Story.

Tiwari said as there is no godown of NCCF at Jamshedpur, they have to wait for the trucks from Delhi and as soon as the supplies come, they get the stock loaded in smaller vehicles for sale in the designated localities.

Surprisingly, the district administration is not aware of the NCCF-sponsored initiative for the sale of onions at a subsidised rate in the rural pockets in and around Jamshedpur.

One of the senior district administration officials when queried said that they would see whether any illegal work is being done in the name of the sale of onions at a subsidised rate.
