THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Nov 6: President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Information Commissioner Heeralal Samariya as the chief of the Central Information Commission (CIC) on Monday.

Following Y K Sinha’s term ending on October 3, the top position on the transparency panel remained vacant.

At an event held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Murmu administered the 63-year-old Samairya the oath of office, according to a statement released by the president’s office.

Officials stated that Eight Information Commissioner positions are vacant following Samariya’s appointment as Chief Information Commissioner.

The Commission currently has two Information Commissioners.

There can be a maximum of 10 Information Commissioners on the Commission, which is led by the Chief Information Commissioner.

The appointment follows a directive from the Supreme Court on October 30, instructing both the Central and state governments to address the vacancy in order to prevent the 2005 Right to Information law from becoming ineffective.
